THE WRITER AND THE PLAY:

Jean-Baptiste Poquelin was a French actor, writer and satirist who adopted the stage name Molière.  Poquelin was born in 1622 in Paris and died there in 1673.   He is known for “animating the absurd” and most notably skewering the ruling classes frailties by through comedic dramatization of vanity, greed, avarice and lust past the line of probability.  Tartuffe, perhaps the most scandalous and sacrosanct of Molière’s plays was banned for five years due to the outrage of Roman Catholic church over the subject matter.  The character Tartuffe is a con man who is using a false connection to the Catholic Church as a means to drain a wealthy man of his money and seduce his wife.  The play’s subtitles are listed as The Imposter or The Hypocrite and was first performed in 1664.

AVAILABLE ROLES:

MADAME PERNELLE      Orgon’s mother.  She is totally deluded by Tartuffe until near the end of the play.

ORGON                                 Husband of Elmire, son of Madame Pernelle, and father of Mariane and Damis, is the central character of the play and comes entirely under the influence of the hypocrite Tartuffe. Orgon, by nature is extravagant and uncontrolled – lives in a world of extremes.  A man of means.

ELMIRE                                Orgon’s second wife, is reasonable, crafty and wise.

DAMIS                                   Orgon’s son and Elmire’s stepson, uses his common sense to see through Tartuffe, but when he tries to prove him a hypocrite to his father, he is disinherited.  Hot-headed and full of angst.

MARIANE                            Orgon’s daughter, is in love with Valère and is being forced by her father to marry Tartuffe.  Rich and Young. At times spoiled, at times sweet.

VALÈRE                               Mariane’s suitor who is rejected by Orgon in favor of Tartuffe.  Rich and Young.  At times spoiled, at times sweet.

CLÉANTE                            Orgon’s brother-in-law, tries, usually unsuccessfully, to get everyone to view things with calm and reason.

TARTUFFE                          An adept hypocrite and religious poser, Tartuffe can spot victims a mile away. Orgon and his mother are infatuated with Tartuffe and believe he is a devout savior to the family.

DORINE                                Mariane’s maid and confidant.  She is rational, wise and blunt and loves nothing more than to point out gullibility and falseness with aplomb.

OTHER:                                 This production may also feature members of the household staff –roles are TBD.
