Faculty Recruitment in Theater Studies

The Department of Theater and Dance, University of California, Santa Barbara, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track, Assistant Professor position in European Theater and Performance Studies, effective July 1, 2018. The highly ranked Department of Theater and Dance offers BA, BFA, MA and PhD degrees. The Theater Studies faculty and PhD program emphasize the study of theater, dance, and performance from a global perspective. (See www.theaterdance.ucsb.edu for the curriculum).

We seek a colleague whose research covers some range in Anglo-European practices and products from the late-16th to the mid-20th centuries with expertise in more than one continental tradition. The successful candidate will teach the history of theater and performance in their textual and material expressions at graduate and undergraduate levels. Inquiry into the links among corporealities, scripts, and cultural analysis welcomed. Potential research areas include, but are not limited to: Shakespeare and his contemporaries (within and outside England); material and architectural conditions of the theater and its performers; new historicist approaches; social and intellectual context of theater traditions and innovations.

Doctoral degree in theater or in collateral field (e.g. literature, art, film/media, or dance) with evidence of familiarity with the discourse of theater and performance studies. Teaching experience at college or university level highly desirable. Conference presentations or publications pointing to a research program aiming at scholarly publication in an area that complements the department’s strengths, also highly desirable. The department is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching and service.
