Jihye Kim is a first year graduate student in the MA/PhD program. Born and raised in Seoul, Korea, she holds a BFA in Theatre Arts with a Directing concentration and a minor in Sociology from DePaul University. Her research interests include audience reception theory, transnational identity and its representation, and culturally non-Western actors’ embodiment of realism.
As a theatre practitioner, Jihye works as a creative dramaturg, deviser, and director. In the spring of 2015, she co-devised a piece called IRL or Ceci n'est pas une piece, which is composed mainly from the found text of audience members’ social media and aims to explore the presentation of self through social media. In 2013, she was an artistic administration intern at TimeLine Theatre, and in 2014 Jihye worked as a dramaturg for Mud in Seoul. Some of her past credits include the world premiers of The Tumble Weed (Director) and We’re Going To Be Fine (Dramaturg), Shadow Box (AD), Round and Round the Garden (AD), Gruesome Playground Injuries (Dramaturg), Vigils (Dramaturg), The Killing Game (Dramaturg).
