Dance AUDITION InFORMATION Students desiring to attend UCSB as dance majors must audition for acceptance into the major and to determine placement in the modern dance and ballet technique series. Modern Dance, 56A-F and 156A-F, is a four-year series, and proficiency at a specified level of technique is required for graduation. The ballet technique series, Dance 47A F and 147A C, also requires a specific level of proficiency for graduation. Portions of these requirements may be waived according to the results of the entrance audition, but the student is required to participate in the level of modern dance and ballet technique appropriate to his/her technical ability throughout enrollment in the major program. A student not able to qualify for Dance 56A and/or Dance 47A, as determined by the entrance audition, will not be able to declare a Dance major until such time as he/she reauditions and does successfully qualify for that class. It must be understood that admittance into the dance program is determined by successful completion of the audition and by meeting academic standards established by the Office of Admissions. A successful audition does not guarantee acceptance into UCSB. Auditions for the dance major are held during the months of January and February preceding the student's attendance at the University. An audition is also offered during "Discovery Days" orientation week in September for students who are unable to attend the earlier dates. Students are strongly advised to attend an earlier audition however, both to determine qualification for the major and to reserve a place in the program, since only a limited number of students can be accommodated each year. Video auditions are accepted on a limited basis. The Dance Audition January and February Audition: The dance audition activities will begin with registration at 9:00 am in front of the Performing Arts wing of the Humanities and Social Sciences Building (HSSB), on the specified date. Please park in lot 22 and use the self-pay permit dispensers. At 10:00 am students and parents are invited to meet dance faculty members and students currently enrolled in the dance major program to learn more about the program, and see excerpts from class routines and selections from our professional company and student company repertoire. At 11:00 am we will serve light refreshments. The actual audition will begin at 12:00 pm and go until approximately 2:30 pm. (Only those participating are allowed in the audition studio during that time; no observers, please.) Please return the audition registration form as soon as possible to reserve a space. Be advised that there are a limited number of audition spaces available for each date. When all audition spaces are filled, we will no longer accept registration forms. Those who are unable to attend the January or February dates may participate in the September audition or submit a video audition by February 1st. September Audition: Registration will begin at 9:30 am in the Ballet Studio in the Performing Arts wing of the Humanities and Social Sciences Building, HSSB 1151, on the specified date. The audition will begin promptly at 10:00 am. Students attending the September audition will have the opportunity to meet faculty and ask questions at the New Dance Majors Meeting during "Discovery Days" orientation week; check the Fall Schedule of Classes for the date, time, and location of that meeting. The audition should be viewed as a challenging but positive experience, and students should regard it as a learning experience. The format of the audition is similar to that of a class, and will accommodate:
